Our two breeding herds have unfortunately contracted swine dysentery, a condition caused by the bacteria Brachyspira hyodysenteriae in the large intestine. Swine dysentery is known for causing diarrhea in young pigs, often with blood and mucus present. Initially, we attributed the symptoms to a possible issue with the diet, such as a changeover or poor quality feed. However, as other farms that received weaners from us experienced similar issues, it became clear that we were dealing with a larger problem.

After testing confirmed the presence of swine dysentery, we made the difficult decision to cull the herds. This process will begin once the current batches of sows are weaned, with a planned end to serving of sows in December. While it was previously discussed with BQP to repopulate the herds as part of a routine plan, the current situation requires a longer period out of production.

This unexpected turn of events will result in a three-month break from production, significantly impacting our operations and finances. Overcoming this challenge will be a priority for the coming year, and I will provide updates on the progress in my future Farmer Focus articles. Additionally, I look forward to sharing my unique experience in the world of global-hit TV in the near future.
