As combines are gradually being stored away across the UK, some crops are still awaiting harvest due to challenging weather conditions.

In Somerset, harvest is mostly complete with a few fields of linseed and beans remaining to be harvested. Yields have been average, with winter barley performing well on free-draining land but lower yields on heavier soils. Wheat crops were affected by septoria and brown rust, but had relatively clean, ergot-free grain. Spring crops like barley, peas, and beans had good yields and quality.

In East Anglia, harvest is 99% complete with mixed results due to variable weather conditions. Barley yields were reasonable with low nitrogen levels, while oats had exceptional yields and weights. Wheat showed good specific weights and Hagberg numbers, but lower protein levels. Ergot was a widespread issue this year, exacerbated by wet weather and changing farming practices.

In Yorkshire, contractor Mervyn Hornsby reported an average harvest with disappointments in barley and wheat yields. Spring oats performed well despite challenging conditions. In Fife, John Hutcheson had a mixed harvest with spring oats still to be harvested. Oilseed rape yields were lower than usual, while barley and wheat yields were average. Spring barley outperformed winter barley.

Overall, farmers are facing challenges due to fluctuating crop prices, making it a tough financial year despite decent harvest outcomes.
