As World Iron Awareness Week (October 14-20) approaches, there is a strong reason to highlight the issue of iron deficiency in Canada. Recent national research (2023) reveals that Canadians are struggling with iron deficiency more than previously reported, emphasizing the value of iron-rich foods in Canadian diets, such as beef.

Iron deficiency can have serious short- and long-term health consequences. Statistics show that nearly 30% of women aged 19-50 in Canada are affected by iron deficiency, with this figure potentially exceeding 50% during pregnancy. In girls aged 14-18, the rate is around 27%.

“Canadian research has shown that consuming red meat is the strongest dietary predictor associated with better iron status in women,” says registered dietitian Karine Rekunyk. “Correcting low iron levels can take months or even longer, so individuals at risk of low iron should include iron-rich foods like beef in most meals to help prevent deficiency.”
