Why is My Cow Itching: Causes and Solutions

In the past, producers and veterinarians reported cases of cattle showing symptoms of shedding and itching even after being treated with pour-on products such as Ivomec, Dectomax, and Cydectin. This has led to the speculation that resistance to lice may have developed. However, some veterinarians investigating these cases have reported that they did not find any lice present. Other potential causes of itching include various parasites (such as microscopic mites), environmental factors (like barley hull allergies, frostbite, and hay mites), nutritional deficiencies (for instance, deficiencies in vitamin A or zinc), and mycotoxins (such as ergot, citrinin, and T2 toxins).

The objectives of this study are as follows:
1. To understand the factors causing itching in cattle in Western Canada that are potentially preventable or treatable.

This project aims to identify the factors contributing to itching in the absence of obvious parasitic involvement. Additionally, it is being funded by the Beef Cattle Research Council, Alberta Veterinary Laboratories, and BVR Pharmacy.
