Ondokuz Mayıs University Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal announced the establishment of the ‘Cannabis Research Institute’ in 2019. Ünal stated that significant efforts are being made to transform cannabis into an industrial product. He emphasized that the university provides valuable resources for Turkey through cannabis genetics.
Ünal highlighted that increasing the added value of cannabis is possible by converting this plant into an industrial product. He mentioned that a protocol has been signed with the Ministry of National Defense regarding domestic cable production, aiming to eliminate foreign dependency. He also noted that the use of cannabis in the defense industry will be significant, and ongoing studies in this field continue.
Among the projects conducted by the university is a collaboration with the Turkish Space Agency. Ünal explained that research is ongoing regarding the use of cannabis in the healthcare sector, particularly in addressing health issues such as cancer.
Emphasizing that cannabis is a versatile material that can also be used in textiles, Ünal stated that cannabis is a durable, healthy, and local product. He described cannabis as a miraculous plant and expressed optimism about its future potential.
