On Monday, March 4th, the UK government announced that the fishing sector will gain access to more than 2,200 tonnes of fishing opportunities as a result of annual negotiations with the Faroe Islands for the year 2024.
As part of the new agreement, UK fishermen will receive 920 tonnes of both cod and haddock, along with 600 tonnes of saithe. The deal will also include allocations for other species such as Redfish, blue ling, flatfish, and ling.
This agreement reinforces the mutual commitment of the UK and the Faroe Islands to collaborate on monitoring, control, and surveillance, as well as on scientific research initiatives.
The deal comes after recent negotiations with the EU and Norway, completed before Christmas, which provided access for the UK fishing industry to 420,000 tonnes of fishing opportunities valued at up to £700 million.
Fisheries Minister Mark Spencer expressed:
“I’m delighted that we have successfully brokered a deal with the Faroe Islands for 2024, which allows UK fishing vessels to access essential stocks like haddock and saithe.”
“This builds upon the robust agreements already achieved with the EU and Norway for 2024, reflecting our status as an independent coastal nation. Our priority is to strengthen a viable and sustainable UK fishing industry while protecting our marine environment for upcoming generations.”
Post-Brexit, the UK has taken advantage of its newfound freedoms, enabling it to secure agreements that are favourable for the domestic fishing sector.
Every year, the UK engages in negotiations with the Faroese Government under a bilateral framework, focusing on potential quota exchanges and wider fisheries management strategies.
This agreement underlines the ongoing dedication of both nations to sustainably manage fisheries and ensure the long-term health of fish stocks.
During the negotiation process, the UK Government collaborated closely with devolved administrations to guarantee that fishing communities across the UK will gain from this agreement.
