Farmers facing challenges with spreading lime on grassland fields have been reminded by researchers and advisers in Northern Ireland that it is a beneficial practice when conditions allow. According to experts at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprises (Cafre), wet weather in 2023 and 2024 has made it difficult for farmers to lime their fields. Those in Soil Nutrient Health Scheme zones one and two have received their Soil Analysis reports and can now follow recommendations for applying lime. Even without government support, lime is essential for improving soil health and crop productivity. Cafre offers the following tips for applying lime late in the year: create a liming plan based on Soil Analysis, prioritize acidic fields, incorporate lime during reseeding or cultivation, avoid applying slurry after lime, choose the right type of lime based on pH levels, and regularly test soil pH levels. To determine the optimal pH levels for different soil types, farmers can use the lime application calculator provided by the Agricultural Lime Association.
