Overview of Spring Barley
Recently, we published findings from five trials of fungicide-treated Recommended List (RL) spring barley.
These trials were conducted in locations including Kent, Glamorgan, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and Highland Scotland.
The average yield for the control varieties stands at 8.76 t/ha, which significantly surpasses the five-year average of 7.87 t/ha, though there’s notable variability between different trials.
With a total of 21 fungicide-treated trials, these results provide an initial snapshot of what to expect, reflecting early commercial harvest outcomes.
Insights for the 2024 Season
So far in 2024, most barley varieties have shown yields consistent with their five-year averages.
The leading variety, Bounty, achieved an impressive yield of 107% of the control average and has been provisionally approved for brewing by the Malting Barley Committee (MBC).
Close behind is Belter, registering 106% of controls, also provisionally approved for brewing and malt distilling, both varieties newly recommended last year.
Next is Gambit, recording a yield of 104%, though it won’t progress with the MBC and has been designated as a feed variety, pending review as such by the RL committee in November.
Additionally, five varieties achieved 103% of controls: Firefoxx; Diviner, provisionally approved for malt distilling; Aquarius, newly recommended for brewing use; Olsen, also newly recommended and provisionally approved for brewing and malt distilling; and Laureate.
Tennyson, fully approved for malt distilling by the MBC this spring, yields at 102% and so does the newly recommended variety Munro, which, like Gambit, has been reclassified as a feed variety.
Currently, the only feed variety on the RL is Hurler, which is performing at 102% for 2024, while the Null-Lox variety CB Score is at 100%. The described grain distilling variety Fairing is trailing at 94%.
Since only a fraction of the trials have been completed, these findings are preliminary and may undergo significant changes as more data comes in.
