TZOB President Şemsi Bayraktar outlined the challenges and expectations of sunflower producers. He noted that although the sunflower harvest has begun in the Mediterranean region, farmers are not achieving the expected yield. He emphasized that producers’ income is insufficient, and consumers are purchasing sunflower oil at high prices.

Bayraktar highlighted the importance of sunflowers for the economy and stated that sunflower production must be included in production planning. However, this year farmers have not met their yield targets. Due to rising costs and declining yields, the country is falling short in sunflower production and is compensating for the shortfall through imports.

He pointed out significant increases in oil prices in recent years and stressed the need for an increase in producers’ income and marketing guarantees. He mentioned that Input Costs, including fuel, fertilizers, and pesticides, have risen, and support for these expenses should be adjusted accordingly.

Bayraktar underscored the necessity of maintaining high customs tax rates on sunflowers and their products to protect and boost domestic production, expressing hope that producers will have a season where their efforts are duly rewarded.
