Scottish farmers purchasing sheep at certain marts now have the option to pay £1.20 per head for a sheep dipping service to prevent the spread of scab to their existing flocks. Caledonian Marts in Stirling has introduced this innovative approach to tackle the increasing levels of scab in Scottish flocks. Last week, 1,100 sheep were treated at the marts. The dipping service is subcontracted by the company on sale dates, with the additional cost added to the purchase price. This initiative may be extended to other marts in the UK to reduce the risk of scab in the national flock.
Oliver Shearman, the managing director of Caledonian Marts, noted a growing number of farmers utilizing the service since its launch. He emphasized the importance of controlling scab spread in the national flock and highlighted the convenience and confidence it provides to buyers. Sheep scab is a serious issue that can lead to weight loss, reduced fertility, and even death in affected animals. Dipping helps eliminate the mites causing the condition and minimizes transmission.
Neil Wilson, the executive director of IAAS, encouraged other marts to follow Caledonian Marts’ example in offering sheep dipping services. He stressed the effectiveness of dipping in controlling scab spread and the benefits it brings to the industry. By working together on this issue, marts and farmers can enhance the reputation of livestock trading places as safe and responsible environments.
