Kümbet Ova, located in the Aydıncık district of Yozgat, is one of Turkey’s significant onion production centers. The harvest of dry onions, planted on an area of 5,000 decares, has begun in this region. The price of these onions varies between 2 to 4 Turkish Liras per kilogram, and they are being prepared for sale in bags directly from the fields.
However, due to unusually warm weather this year, onion yields have been low. While onions sold for 8 Turkish Liras per kilogram last year, they are struggling to find buyers this year, with prices dropping to as low as 4 Liras. Producers are facing challenges despite rising costs, and in markets, onion prices can surge up to three times higher.
Farmers like İrfan Erkoç and Yunus Karabulut express the need to receive fair compensation for their hard work. They highlight that rising Input Costs, reduced yields, and declining prices are causing significant issues for farmers. Onion producers are calling for fair wages for laborers and the recognition of their labor. The drop in yield compared to last year and decreasing prices are adversely affecting the profitability of these farmers.
