Livestock breeders are encouraged to participate in a brief online survey to assist in monitoring and combating cases of bluetongue in the UK. The recent outbreak, which began on 26 August, has led to nearly 100 confirmed cases, resulting in restriction zones across the east of England. The survey, open to all livestock farms regardless of previous bluetongue cases, aims to collect data on the number of affected animals and observed symptoms.
Fiona Lovatt of Flock Health Limited, in collaboration with Ruminant Health & Welfare, AHDB, and the University of Nottingham, is leading the survey. Ms. Lovatt emphasizes the importance of capturing farmers’ experiences and the impact on their animals throughout the outbreak. The survey seeks to gather information on clinical signs, mortality rates, and farmers’ willingness to vaccinate against bluetongue serotype 3 in the future.
Farm businesses can complete the anonymous survey online. Additionally, Defra Secretary Steve Reed recently visited a livestock farm in Essex within the restricted zone to better understand the outbreak and its management. Emergency authorization for three bluetongue vaccines was granted earlier in September to help combat the disease. Vigilance from all livestock keepers and farmers is crucial in preventing the spread of bluetongue, with field teams and experts working tirelessly to support affected farmers.
