How Milking Protocol Reset Improved Mastitis Management: A SEO-Friendly Approach

Ifan Ifans noticed a concerning increase in mastitis levels and somatic cell count in his autumn-calving dairy herd at Tyddyn Cae near Pwllheli. To address this issue, Ifan made changes to improve udder health and overall milk quality.

Established on a greenfield site five years ago, Tyddyn Cae boasts a 20/40 Fullwood semi-rapid exit parlour and New Zealand and Irish Friesian cows. The farm focuses on autumn milk production and supplies South Caernarfon Creameries.

To tackle high mastitis levels, the farm participated in the Farming Connect Our Farms network and received guidance from Tom Greenham of Advance Milking. Changes included adjusting the milking parlour routine, increasing milk recording frequency, implementing selective dry cow therapy, improving scraping frequency during housing, and investing in herd monitoring software.

Although it is still early to measure the impact of these changes, Ifan is optimistic that the improvements will pay off in the long run. The Farming Connect Our Farms network is hosting events in September to share project results and trials, showcasing innovative practices for sustainable farming.
