Arla, the UK’s largest dairy co-operative, has introduced a dairy vending machine in North London as part of an initiative to supply dairy products to over 100 food banks in the UK. A survey conducted by Arla and charity FareShare revealed that fresh dairy products are in high demand at food banks, but limited storage space prevents them from meeting the needs of the community. To address this issue, Arla has committed to providing 100 fully stocked fridges to charities nationwide.

Jonathan Dixon, Arla’s senior vice-president, stated, “We are dedicated to improving access to nutritious dairy products for communities across the UK. Many charities are unable to accept fresh dairy donations due to lack of storage, but our partnership with FareShare aims to solve this problem.” Research conducted by Arla showed that dairy is considered essential in the diets of 90% of UK adults, but there is a lack of awareness about its health benefits.

Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine supports Arla’s efforts to increase access to dairy products, emphasizing the nutritional benefits of milk. Ben Ashmore, head of external affairs at FareShare, noted the growing demand for nutritious dairy products at food banks and the challenges faced by charities in storing refrigerated items. Thanks to Arla’s donation of fridges, charities can now offer a wider variety of nutritious food options to those in need.
