The Federal government announced on Friday that it will invest over $4.3 million to enhance the long-term security and Sustainability of the oilseed industry in Eastern Canada.
The funds allocated to ECODA (Eastern Canada Oilseed Development Alliance) are expected to support the development of new agronomy technologies that address environmental challenges, improve planting systems, and create compatible crop varieties that meet market demands such as Climate Change and soil degradation.
Founded in 2009, ECODA is a private, non-profit organization that coordinates research initiatives in Eastern Canada to promote Innovation and market opportunities within the oilseed supply chain.
The initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by facilitating knowledge transfer among stakeholders and improving soil health, crop resilience, and yields.
In 2023, oilseeds were planted on just over 4 million acres in Eastern Canada, with the majority of this area (70%) being soybeans. Eastern Canada accounts for 14% of the oilseeds planted and 22% of the total production.
Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay emphasized during the funding announcement in Prince Edward Island that “oilseed crops are an essential part of agriculture in Eastern Canada. This support will help farmers overcome challenges such as Climate Change and keep their crops healthy.”
