Eight young students who identify as black or people of color are set to attend the prestigious Oxford Farming Conference (OFC) in January 2025, thanks to a sponsorship initiative aimed at promoting greater diversity. The program, organized by OFC in collaboration with McDonald’s UK and Ireland, is part of the Breaking Barriers Programme, which aims to bring new perspectives to the agricultural sector.

Selected from various fields such as veterinary medicine and Sustainability consulting, these scholars will inject innovative ideas and expertise into the conference. Over the past five years, the Breaking Barriers Programme has seen a significant increase in participants, contributing to the sector’s growth and development.

Diversity is crucial in the farming industry, according to Navaratnam Partheeban, an OFC director. He believes that the sector should reflect the country’s diverse population to better serve consumers. The OFC, scheduled for January 8th, will provide a platform for these scholars to showcase their talents and engage with industry professionals.

The Breaking Barriers Scholarship not only offers access to the conference but also provides tailored support, including mentoring, workshops, and networking opportunities. Scholars will participate in a pre-event program to enhance their skills and prepare for future careers. This initiative, as described by student Navjot Gill, fosters connections and promotes inclusivity in the agricultural landscape.

Director Jude McCann views the program as transformative, with the scholars representing the future of agriculture. Their diverse experiences and insights are seen as vital for driving Innovation and resilience in the industry. Diversity, he emphasizes, is not just a checkbox but a crucial factor for success in agriculture.
