Istanbul Member of Parliament Müşerref Pervin Tuba Durgut has indicated that some farmers have begun cultivating strawberries instead of tobacco. She noted that if food crops were prioritized over tobacco farming, the global hunger issue could have been significantly mitigated. Durgut highlighted that each year, 600 million trees are cut down for tobacco cultivation, which translates to an area of 200,000 hectares. Furthermore, she pointed out that tobacco farming contributes to the release of 84 million tons of carbon monoxide pollution. She emphasized that it takes a staggering 22 billion tons of water globally to produce a single tobacco leaf that ends up in a cigarette pack, and she stated that smoking claims the lives of 8 million people each year, placing ecosystems and the planet at risk.
Tobacco Farming Endangers Soil and Water Resources
Durgut asserted that the pesticides used in tobacco cultivation poison soil and water resources, explaining that the tobacco plant depletes soil nutrients and worsens land fertility.
