Previously, Michael relied on flail hedge cutting units to manage typical hawthorn hedges on farms and the evergreens found in rural areas.

Using a flail mower on these types often resulted in challenges with the quality of the finish, leaving behind bulky clippings.

“While flail hedge-cutters work fine on thorn hedges,” Michael noted, “they fall short on evergreen varieties.

“The draft generated by the rotating flails could cause the hedge tips to fly away from the blades, making it tough to achieve a straight and tidy cut.

Additionally, it left large clumps of unmulched clippings behind, resulting in an unsightly mess. We needed to elevate our service to guarantee a professional finish every single time.”

“A representative from G Richardson Agri Ltd. in Cheshire arranged for a demonstration unit, allowing me to test it out on my Shelbourne Reynolds HD 865 VFRT,” Michael shared.

“Switching from the flail head to the Major rotary head was straightforward. I quickly noticed it required significantly less oil flow to operate and, consequently, less engine power, which would undoubtedly lower my fuel expenses.”

The Major 1.43m Hedge-cutter head fits most hedge cutter arms on the market with no modifications needed. It boasts a total head width of 1.6m and a cutting width of 1.43m.

To operate, it requires only about 36hp and an oil flow of 80 litres per minute at a maximum pressure of 170 bar. The Major Hedge Cutter is fully galvanised, ensuring long-lasting protection against corrosion.

“After we started using this new Major Hedge-cutting head,” Michael exclaimed, “we estimated we were saving approximately £100 a week on fuel costs alone, due to how much easier it was to operate.

“It mulched evergreen clippings similar to a flail head, but considering the fuel savings, we could afford to buy another Major hedge-cutter head entirely on those savings alone, which is remarkable!”
