Collaborating with Farmers to Restore the Countryside: A Nature Envoy’s Key Role
The Countryside Alliance has emphasized the importance of any government-appointed nature envoy working closely with rural communities to enhance environmental conservation efforts. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is reportedly looking to appoint a nature envoy to position the UK at the forefront of global environmental initiatives. Additionally, there are plans to appoint a climate envoy as well.
Mo Metcalf-Fisher, the Countryside Alliance’s director of external affairs, highlighted the necessity for the envoy to collaborate with those directly involved in rural areas, such as farmers and gamekeepers, to achieve successful nature recovery. The focus should be on working together with local stakeholders rather than implementing top-down approaches.
According to reports from The Guardian, several individuals are being considered for the nature envoy role, including Tony Juniper, the chairman of Natural England, Tanya Steele, the chief executive of the Worldwide Fund for Nature, and Edward Davey, a former aide to King Charles. It is crucial that these appointments prioritize the well-being of the countryside and its communities in their efforts to protect and restore nature.
