Carmen Crespo Appointed Chair of European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee in Spain

Carmen Crespo Díaz, a Spanish lawmaker affiliated with the European People’s Party (EPP), has been unanimously elected as the chair of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee as of Tuesday, July 23. This appointment has garnered positive reactions from both industry stakeholders and environmental organizations.

In addition to Crespo, four vice presidents were elected: Sander Smit (EPP, Netherlands), Giuseppe Milazzo (ECR, Italy), Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew, France), and Jessica Polfjärd (EPP, Sweden). Crespo expressed her commitment to improving European fisheries, highlighting the sector’s vulnerability and significance to local communities. As a representative from Andalusia, where she previously handled agriculture and fisheries policy, she aims to advocate effectively for these crucial industries.

Crespo’s background in a region known for its food production has been met with approval from various stakeholders. Europêche, a leading representative of Europe’s industrial fisheries sector, noted her comprehensive understanding of the fisheries industry’s challenges and opportunities, which positions her well to guide sustainable fisheries policies that benefit coastal communities.

Environmental NGOs have acknowledged Crespo’s influence within the EPP and her political experience. Natividad Sanchez, director of communications at Oceana Europe, indicated that her prior role as the regional minister for agriculture, fisheries, water, and rural development in Andalusia could lead to better integration of regional fisheries management with the EU’s broader objectives.

However, NGOs have expressed concerns that the EPP may prioritize economic interests over environmental protections. Sanchez emphasized the hope that Crespo’s leadership will focus significantly on enhancing the environmental aspects of fisheries management to secure a sustainable future for the sector.
