Mehmet Hanifi GÜLEL reports that this year, the high yield of pistachios has led to a decrease in prices. At the beginning of the harvest season, fresh Antep pistachios were sold for 135 Turkish liras per kilogram, but they have now dropped to 100 liras, reflecting a decline of 25.9%. Similarly, the price of pistachios used for baklava has fallen from 1500 liras to 1000 liras, a decrease of 33.3%. This situation is adversely affecting the prices of Antep pistachios, which have been considered an investment vehicle in previous years.
Representatives from the sector state that only traders are purchasing pistachios and are calling for the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) to take action to prevent further price drops. Last year, Turkey’s pistachio production was recorded at 176,000 tons, and this year’s high yield is driving prices down.
In Şanlıurfa, while pistachio prices are declining, rising costs have farmers urging the TMO to intervene. Farmers are anxiously monitoring the price drop of pistachios despite the rise in hazelnut prices.
Ahmet Polat, president of the Nizip Pistachio Producers Cooperative, notes that the price of fresh Antep pistachios has decreased from 135 to 100 liras per kilogram. Prices for roasted pistachios have shown an increase after the holiday, and baklava pistachio prices are also falling, negatively impacting farmers.
Mehmet Yıldırım, president of the Baklava and Dessert Producers Association (BAKTAD), indicates that while pistachio prices are declining, the sector has not increased its pricing.
In conclusion, the ongoing price drops in Antep pistachios and other pistachio varieties continue to adversely affect farmers and the sector. Traders are urgently awaiting the TMO’s intervention to stabilize prices and protect farmers.
