Izmir is one of the significant provinces for tomato production in Turkey. Last year, İzmir produced 770,034 tons of processing and drying tomatoes across 97,267 decares of land. This year, the planting area has exceeded 100,000 decares, leading to an increase in production volume due to improved yield. However, the rising production has resulted in a drop in tomato prices, putting farmers in a difficult situation.
The increase in Input Costs has also adversely affected farmers. Compared to the previous year, Input Costs rose by 150%. Consequently, farmers are struggling to cover their expenses. Especially in a country where even water is sold at high prices, the significantly low prices of tomatoes are leaving farmers in a challenging position.
The President of the Torbalı Chamber of Commerce, Abdulvahap Olgun, emphasized that a large portion of the tomatoes grown in Torbalı is destined for paste production, suggesting a reduction in the area allocated for paste production.
Kemal Saygıner, who exports dried tomatoes, noted that there has been an increase in tomato production nationwide this year, resulting in a very high yield. However, he pointed out that due to the increased production, especially the prices for processing tomatoes have fallen, causing loss for farmers. He also expressed concerns about the possibility of products being left unharvested in the fields.
