EU centre-right party targets agriculture Commissioner, according to farming policy chief

The chair of the European Parliament’s Agriculture and Rural Development Committee (AGRI) is expected to be taken by the Conservatives, according to Herbert Dorfmann, the current European People’s Party (EPP) coordinator for agriculture. Dorfmann, who has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009, is considered a strong candidate for the position due to his technical competence and political experience.

The European People’s Party (EPP) has recently repositioned itself as the ‘farmers’ party’, aiming for the post of Commissioner for Agriculture. Dorfmann emphasized the importance of having a strong EPP Commissioner for agriculture, focusing on making farming an attractive profession in Europe, especially for young people, and ensuring that farmers can earn a decent income.

When it comes to forming a majority in the European Parliament, Dorfmann suggested that seeking support from the Greens may not be the best approach. He emphasized the need for a change in the method used by the Commission, highlighting the importance of including farmers in decision-making processes.

Regarding the structure of the Environment Committee (ENVI), Dorfmann stated that there are currently no plans to split the committee into separate bodies dedicated to health and the environment. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the current structure, which unites food, health, and environmental competence in one committee.

Overall, Dorfmann’s stance on agriculture and the European Parliament’s committees reflects a focus on ensuring a balanced approach that considers the needs of farmers and the environment.
