Von der Leyen pledges fair income for farmers in her second term as Commission president

Ursula von der Leyen addressed the European Parliament on Thursday, promising to ensure a fair income for European farmers in response to the protests that swept across the EU earlier in the year. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of not forcing farmers to sell their produce below production costs and acknowledged the need to strengthen farmers’ position in the food chain.

Von der Leyen received a comfortable majority vote for a second term as European Commission president, with plans to unveil a “Vision for Agriculture and Food” within the first 100 days of her new mandate. The vision will focus on long-term competitiveness and sustainability in the farming sector.

She also announced the appointment of a dedicated Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, highlighting the importance of rewarding farmers for sustainable management of nature and biodiversity. The future Commission will address climate change challenges facing farmers and prioritize sustainable water management to ensure food security and overall competitiveness.

Overall, von der Leyen’s speech touched on key issues affecting the agricultural sector in Europe, with a commitment to specific actions and strategies in the coming term.
