The governments of Canada and Ontario have provided over CAD 12.2 million in support for 213 projects that assist farmers in making their agricultural land healthier and more resilient. This funding is utilized through the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program’s first phase to support grassland and tree planting, reduce soil tillage, and create water retention basins. These improvements help farmers increase their resilience to extreme weather events while enhancing the health of soil and water, ultimately boosting biodiversity on their properties.

Rob Flack, the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, stated, “We want to support Ontario farmers, who are globally recognized, with permanent farm improvements that ensure long-term growth and environmental resilience. We encourage our farmers to take advantage of the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program, which is still open for new applications. This represents an extraordinary opportunity to expand within our nearly CAD 51 billion agriculture sector.”

Funding amounts vary depending on the type and scope of the project. The second phase remains available as of June 3, 2024, and farmers are encouraged to apply through the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association website. Eligible applicants can receive up to CAD 30 per acre for reduced tillage and up to CAD 25,000 per acre for establishing new wetlands on agricultural lands.
