Crop varieties being considered for placement on the AHDB’s Recommended List (RL) will now undergo a more rigorous evaluation process, including review by a committee. New target specifications have been introduced, raising the standards for disease resistance and agronomic traits. Varieties must demonstrate strong characteristics in order to earn recommendation, with a focus on providing consistent economic benefits to the UK cereals and oilseeds industry.

One of the key changes is the addition of new target specifications for diseases such as mildew and brown rust in winter wheat, as well as an increased emphasis on untreated yield and disease resistance in other crops. Varieties that fail to meet these targets must show unique strengths compared to established varieties to be recommended.

The AHDB’s Recommended List project involves assessing over 25,000 trial plots each year, ensuring that recommended varieties meet the evolving needs of growers and end users. The results of this year’s selections will be published in RL 2025-26 on 2 December 2024.

If you have expertise in the field and are interested in shaping the future of the Recommended List, you can contact the AHDB to learn about opportunities to join the crop committees. Joining the committees can allow you to contribute to the selection of recommended varieties and help drive Innovation in the industry.
