Nexgen, a UK start-up, has developed a biodegradable alternative to plastic tree guards in order to minimize the Environmental Impact of tree protection. Made from a blend of wool, cashew oil, and castor oil, these shelters are strong enough to defend against damage from various animals. They can last for at least five years, after which the tree should be able to thrive on its own. The shelters are eco-friendly, breaking down without releasing harmful toxins or affecting the soil’s pH. Nexgen offers three types of guards – tree shelters, hedging guards, and vole guards – in different sizes. Manufactured in the UK using lower grade British wool, these guards will be available for purchase in November at a slightly higher price than plastic options. Despite the cost, Nexgen claims that their guards are still a cost-effective choice in the long run.
