Global dairy processor Lactalis has issued notice to 12 of its farmer suppliers in south-west Scotland, giving them 12 months to find a new processor. These farmers supply the Lactalis site in Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway through the Milk Suppliers Association co-operative. The decision to drop these producers was made after a business review of supply in the region. NFU Scotland has criticized the move and called for a meeting with Lactalis and the Milk Suppliers Association. The lack of protection for producers in contracts allows processors to remove suppliers without clear reasoning. This follows a similar decision by Tesco in August to reduce producers in its Sustainable Dairy Group. Lactalis UK and Ireland’s milk supply and Sustainability director, Matt Friel, stated that the decision was based on various factors, and they are working with impacted farmers and farmer representatives to manage the change. They remain committed to supporting their supplying farms during the transition period.
