Gürsu Plain is known as one of the most fertile plains in the world, and it’s that time of year to harvest Santa Maria pears. An expected yield of 50,000 tons in Gürsu and over 100,000 tons in Bursa is anticipated. While producers are struggling to find labor, they have found a solution in university students.
Students working in the fields during the summer break are contributing to their household economies by earning some pocket money. The Santa Maria pear, with its thin skin and sweet flavor, can maintain its freshness for a long time. Producers report that they have achieved a 30% higher yield compared to the previous year and are selling the Santa Maria pears for 35 Turkish Lira each.
Due to the long shelf life of Santa Maria pears, they are especially exported to countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. University students are assisting with the harvest despite the hot weather, playing an important role in labor shortages. Gürsu Agricultural Chamber President Kamil Dönmez expresses satisfaction with the situation, noting that they expect a yield between 50,000 and 55,000 tons and emphasizing the need for products to enter storage.
With the increasing interest in Santa Maria pears, producers’ hopes for profitability are also rising. The continuation of this productive season is expected in the upcoming periods.
