University of Kentucky to utilize drones for herding cattle in agriculture technology initiative



The University of Kentucky has secured a $910,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to explore the use of drones in herding beef cattle. Researchers at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment will develop a control system for drones to work semi-autonomously near cattle and adjust operations based on the animals’ behavior. This study aims to understand how different breeds of cows respond to unmanned aircraft.

The drones will also be equipped with cameras to create 3D models of cows from aerial photographs, potentially providing ranchers with accurate weight estimates for livestock management purposes. According to Josh Jackson, the principal investigator and assistant extension professor at the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, this research could lead to more efficient livestock management practices that save time, reduce labor, and improve animal welfare.

In another development, CropX has acquired EnGeniousAg, a nitrogen-sensing Technology developer that enhances precision fertilizer application for farmers. CropX plans to integrate this Technology into its farm management system to address nitrogen management challenges in modern farming. Furthermore, S2G Ventures has invested in Amperage Infrastructure Corporation to expand rural broadband access and bridge the digital divide in rural and tribal areas. The investment will support the deployment of digital infrastructure to address the lack of high-speed internet in these regions. Amperage collaborates with rural internet service providers to advance broadband development and has successfully expanded networks in various states.
