Mersin Sweet Orange Receives Geographical Indication Certification
A women’s cooperative in Mersin has successfully secured the protection and geographic indication certification of the Mersin Blood Orange. This initiative will not only help preserve this unique variety of orange but also contribute to the country’s economy. Deniz Alkaç, Purchasing Manager at Metro Türkiye, stated that they have been working for a long time to support Turkish cuisine and local producers, emphasizing their commitment to promoting the Mersin Blood Orange.
Alkaç highlighted that Metro Türkiye is leading efforts to replace cut blood orange trees with new ones, enhancing the product’s value. They have also created awareness for its use in restaurants and supported the women’s cooperative in its application for geographic indication certification. This initiative has permanently increased the product’s value and provided economic benefits to local producers.
Furthermore, Alkaç noted that the collaboration with the women’s cooperative continues for European Union Geographic Indication Certification. With these developments, the Mersin Blood Orange has become a well-protected product that sustainably contributes to the economy.
