EU committee rejects double standards on pesticide levels in food industry

EU farmers are required to adhere to strict production standards, and third-country producers must also comply with these standards if they wish to Export to the EU, as per the recent decision made by the Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). The committee rejected the European Commission’s proposal to lower the maximum residue levels for certain pesticides and fungicides in imported food, stating that these agricultural chemicals are not permitted within the EU. Therefore, products containing residues of these chemicals should be prohibited from entering the EU market. This decision raises the question of whether this signifies the beginning of a more protectionist Agricultural Policy.
